About Us

Omphaloskepsis was founded in 2000 to publish important works of Persian literature in English translation and to provide them in free digital format. Since that time, we have expanded our mission to offer works in both print and electronic format and from other non-western literary traditions. Today, Omphaloskepsis provides access to more than twenty works of literature at no charge and several of these works for sale in print format in our Bookstore. Several works are forthcoming and are previewed here on this site for you to browse.

What's New

1 September 2011

Again, after a considerable absence, the site has been updated, redesigned, and new titles added. Please review our Authors page to find our collections, now sorted between new titles, forthcoming titles (which you may preview), and a listing of all titles that have been completed.

6 September 2005

After a long absence, the collections portion of this site has been updated so that description pages are available for all texts in the Collections page. In the coming months, we hope to make available, in draft form, the entire first half of the English translation of the Ilahi-Nama.

27 July 2003

We're continuing to work on John Andrew Boyle's translation into English of the Ilahi-Nama or Book of God of Farid al-Din Attar. Select chapters are now available, in draft form, for you to view by going to our Collections page.

26 April 2003

We've been a little delayed re-designing our Collections portion of the site. Although no new PDF ebooks are yet available, we think you'll find navigating our Collections a little bit easier. In the meantime, we welcome your suggestions and comments.
